Spotlight-
Pinoy Filipino restaurant and bar
Friday, May 8th 2009-
Along with my very frequent lunch companion Tim, I just experienced a great noon meal that felt light and fresh at the city's first Filippino restaurant on S. Sherwood Forest. An appreciative thanks goes out to Melinda T for recommending this bright new culinary spot on the Baton Rouge Foodie scene.
A lounge-like feel with it's arching shaped bar stretching the entire length of the room. From flat screen tv's and nice accoustics, piping satellite radio tunes including this rendition of a classic song recently sung by Adam Lambert on American Idol. Just another welcome contrast to the ambiance of a swanky island bar overlooking exotic landscapes (the painted scenes make great use of the interior windows I might add), effectively we are swept along to a serene space we found ourselves fully enjoying the aromas, taste and subtle flavors of this evocative island food.
Lacking heat and differing spices and herbs set this food apart from more familiar (to Baton Rouge) Thai or Vietnamese cuisine. In common are fresh ingredients and heavy use of vegetables and white rice, and similar island flavors including coconut milk infused sauces, and uniquely combining pickled green papaya with strong hits of aromatic ginger root. We chose two of the most popular dishes for our first visit. Flan made a perfect sweet caramel finish to our savory choices. I'd advise to skip the coffee.. it wasn't special enough. I was hoping for real cream or better yet condensed milk to spike the bitter beverage (the coffee tasted like "instant"). Overall, we both give this place a 4 thumbs up... out of 4 thumbs. The wait staff was terrific. We WILL be back soon to explore the menu even more.... till then I hope you will become an admirer yourself.
